Lug Nuts & Wheel Studs

For later models, typically from 1968 to 1979 (and up to 1977 for the standard Beetle and 1979 for the Super Beetle), the wheel bolt pattern changed to 4x130, and the lug bolts were upgraded to a larger 14mm x 1.5 thread. The stock lug bolts for these later models also featured a radius seat to match the OEM steel wheels. It's important to note that many owners of these vehicles convert their setup to use wheel studs and lug nuts instead of bolts, especially when installing aftermarket wheels. This conversion requires replacing the drums or hubs with ones that accept studs or installing thread-in studs, and then using corresponding lug nuts (e.g., Acorn style/tapered seat for most aftermarket wheels or ball seat for stock wheels) with the correct thread size (12mm x 1.5 or 14mm x 1.5) to match the newly installed studs.
